Miltown Wood Press Release
16th November 2004

Conservation Group Applauds Miltown Wood Decision

In strongly approving the decision a spokesperson for the Badenoch and Strathspey Conservation Group said “We are naturally delighted at the resounding outcome of the meeting and congratulate Highland Council’s planning staff, all the Councillors present and of course everybody in the community who stood up for saving Milton Wood.”

Commenting on suggestions made at the meeting a BSCG spokesperson said “we thoroughly support the view that was expressed by speakers from the community that this site should become a nature reserve to safeguard it as an amenity for people and wildlife. This could be achieved through an extension of Craigellachie National Nature Reserve or as a Local Nature Reserve. Miltown wood supports UK priority species and supports natural heritage interest comparable to that of Craigellachie National Nature Reserve within which part of it was once included before the new A9 road was built.”

Notes for editors

The Conservation Charity Plantlife International objected to the application. They expressed concern about loss of Juniper which is still in decline in Scotland. Juniper is a priority species in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan the government’s conservation initiative.
