Cambusmore and Glenmore Corridor

The following letter from our convener expressing concern about the overdevelopment of Aviemore and the threat of a major housing proposal at Cambusmore across the Spey from Aviemore was published in The Strathspey and Badenoch Herald of 20th March 2003. BSCG shares local concerns at the threat to Milton wood and bad planning and overdevelopment in the sensitive Glenmore corridor.

Sir,

Discussing the housing threat to Milton Wood the Strathy editorial (March 13) reports understandable outrage at the crazy situation of "no green spaces left for recreation wildlife and general enjoyment" in Aviemore. However the editorial then suggests that Council Planners from Inverness should now "make overtures to Rothiemurchus Estate" to develop controversial housing across the Spey in the Cambusmore area.

A new settlement of over 600 houses at Cambusmore was one of the most ill judged proposals in our now hopelessly outdated local plan. Although backed by former Councillor Dr Ian Glen and Rothiemurchus Estate it was opposed by SNH and the Badenoch and Strathspey Conservation Group when the local plan was being drawn up.

Sanctioning housing in the Cambusmore area would not solve the problem of planning that is bad for the community and the environment, and would greatly worsen the serious problem of inappropriate development and suburbanisation of the Glenmore corridor.

Yours

(Dr) Gus Jones
