Park opposition
The deputy environment minister, Allan Wilson, is unconvincing about the Scottish Executive being proud of its Cairngorms National Park (Letters, 24 December). He writes that
he "had to strike a balance" between this and that, and, in reaching judgment, "took into account all the relevant considerations". His generalities totally lack factual evidence.
Will he deny that he, Executive planners and the Highland MSP and deputy minister, Peter Peacock, agreed in October that a Cairngorms park must get the same planning powers as Loch Lomond and all land recommended by Scottish Natural Heritage, including north Perthshire? Will he deny they then did a U-turn, after the Highland-biased rural development committee went against Loch Lomond powers for the Cairngorms? Can he justify excluding Perthshire and increasing Highland representation, other than to prevent Highland representatives being a board minority? Far from the support he wants, resolute opposition remains and no-one of integrity will serve on the board of such a worthless park. Many who appreciate the Cairngorms talk of voting on this. Labour deserves punishment, especially Highland Labour, and Liberal Democrat ministers should explain why they supported such disreputable proposals.
